Tips From A College Admissions Counselor

As a college admissions counselor, I often get asked about the best way to prepare for college admissions. There are a few key things to keep in mind during your college admissions process.

First and foremost, remember that your college admissions process is unique to you. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to getting into college. College admissions counselors can provide valuable guidance and support, but ultimately it is up to you to put your best foot forward. It is also not the be-all end-all. Your entire future does not hinge on whether or not you get into your top choice school. College is just four (or sometimes five) years of your life. It's important, but it's not everything. You've worked hard through high school and are ready for the next step in your journey. Try not to put too much pressure on yourself during this process. Make sure you're maximizing your time in high school. College Admissions is a process that takes time and effort, and the earlier you start working on it, the better off you'll be.

Second, start early and give yourself plenty of time to explore your options. College admissions can be a time-consuming process, so it's important to start researching colleges and planning your application well in advance of the deadline. Your academics, extracurriculars, test scores, and essays are all pieces of the application that take time to complete so get started early so that it isn't rushed, and you can put your best self forward.

The third thing that every college admissions counselor wishes their students knew is that your essay matters. A lot of times, College Admissions counselors will only have time to skim your essay. They're looking for key qualities like resilience, creativity, and the ability to communicate effectively. Make sure your essay is well-written and showcases who you are as a person. College Admissions counselors are trying to get to know you through your essay, so make it count and show your passion for the essay topic you choose.

Finally, the last thing that every college admissions counselor wishes their students knew is that College Admissions is a process. It's not an event. Your College Admissions journey will start long before you ever fill out an application and it will continue long after you've gotten your acceptance letter. College Admissions is a marathon, not a sprint. Take your time, enjoy the process, and don't forget to breathe. You've got this!
